The cost has become so high and the value low. The car you buy
from a large commercial raceway doesn't look good and doesn't run good.
It takes some rebuilding to make the car competitive. The
Europeans do it a little better. They produce extremely accurate
looking true scale cars. They are even adding electronics so 2
cars can run on the same lane. It
has to be said, that the Scalextric, Carrera, Fly, etc 1 32 slot cars
are not much more than models.
They don't have designed chassis, they
use magnets to help them stay in the slot of a plastic track. You won't
get these around a big commercial slot
car track.
So we are
talking about 2
different types of slot

The hobby of slot
car racing as we know it today, has been
one of the most enduring technological hobbies of modern
times. The exact year of when slot
cars were invented is debatable. As far as being able to buy and race
a car on a slot car track in a
retail venue, that year is probably 1963. So you can see, slot cars
have survived against other hobbies, political climates, video games,
radio control, simulators and even it's own inner turmoil. The
average slot
car
track has struggled
since the late 60's.
It may not survive
too much
longer... Unless.
